New President

The Group is delighted to inform members that Dr Matthew Stout was elected its thirteenth president at the annual general meeting in Trim. Dr Stout has been a long-serving member of the committee and had acted as deputy president over the past three years.

Dr Stout is a lectuerer in early medieval history at St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra. He is author of one of the Group’s most successful publications: The Irish Ringfort (Dublin, Four Courts Press, 1997), as well as co-editor of the recently republished An Atlas of the Irish Landscape (Cork, Cork University Press, 1998 and 2012).

The Group would like to thank Dr Bernadette Cunningham for her work as president over the last three years, and for her service on the committee for much longer.

Farewell to long-serving Treasurer

Niamh Crowley, who has served the Group for thirty-one years, and was the Group’s third treasurer, was applauded for her diligent service to the Group over such a long time. Niamh was a fixture at every conference since her appointment as Treasurer in 1982. At the annual dinner she was presented with a card signed by all those present, as well as a cake. The out-going president, Dr Bernadette Cunningham, thanked her for serving the Group so long and wished her well. Niamh will remain on the committee as an ordinary member.

At the annual general meeting, Dr David Fleming was appointed treasurer for the ensuing year.

Trim Conference – success

The Group’s annual conference was held in Trim on 10-12 May in association with the Trim Archaeological and Historical Society, and was a great success. Many participants thought it one of the best the Group has had in several years. The mix of papers and the excursions to the Castle and town generated a great deal of discussion and interest.

The Group would like to thank Ms. Loreta Guinan, Heritage Officer, Meath County Council, for opening the conference and for the Council’s generous support to our speakers.
